rich with LAF, identified as a macrophage product. However, different mononuclear cell subpopulations might be responsible for the higher production of LAF and KAF under similar conditions. This possibility is under investigation, with the use of purified populations of lymphocytes or macrophages obtained from human peripheral blood. The conditions that affect corneal wound healing at the molecular level are still obscure. The existence of an interaction between epithelial and stromal cells in alkali-burned rabbit corneas has been demonstrated. Fur thermore , a possible regulatory influence of the epithelial cells on keratocyte metabolism in vitro has been observed. 10 The data reported in this study show that the metabolic activity of keratocytes is influenced markedly by products of activated leukocytes. These findings are suggestive of a possible role of the lymphoid cells in the modulation of corneal wound healing. Activation of the keratocyte DNA and protein synthesis can be interpreted as a repair mechanism. However, some of the proteins synthesized might be also involved in catabolic processes. This possibility along with the influence of lymphokines on corneal epithelial and endothelial cells is under consideration.
